About Me#

My name is Petr Ospalý and my handle (usually) is ospalax. I am Czech national born in Brno, Czech Republic.

This is me giving lecture on my Kubernetes appliance for OpenNebula at the Barcelona conference:

First Steps#

I wrote my first lines of code in the last year of elementary school when we were introduced to Turbo Pascal.

At that point I was hooked to computers and I selected a high school with the programming curriculum as a mandatory class.

The following is my school project of choice - Sudoku generator and solver written in Pascal:

Linux and Me#

Later we got introduced into programming in language C, shell scripting and Linux at Brno University and I became Linux user ever since.

My first distribution was an Ubuntu and (I believe) Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake) release.

Breaking and fixing my Linux Desktop was a great way to ramp up some practical skills and it definitively helped me to land first job.

My professional career started around year 2011 as a Junior Linux Sysadmin.

Lifelong Learning#

But I am still in never ending cycle of reading technical books because...

I know how much I don't know...

There are always some two or three books I am reading at the same time as I am constantly trying to chase that knowledge and skill debt which I know I have and I expect to be learning new things on every new job too.

Interests and Hobbies#

My interest lies in good books especially history, fantasy, sci-fi and movies of the same genres. I watch movies for escapism - I have enough drama in regular life.

I don't like the term gamer (it sounds cultish) but I do enjoy a good game when time allows (hardly) - mostly those from turn of the century and early 2000s - the modern games are just interactive movies... unless we dive into indy scene.

I enjoy a fast paced jog in a park, hitting a bag, hiking and exploring new places but it would be much more pleasant without the traveling portion (waiting on airports, security checks on airports, suitcase weight discrimination vs heavy people allowance, hours sandwiched in tiny space with strangers where just a single one with zero-civic-sense and bad manners can create a hell in the sky, long bus drives... etc. - yeah, I really don't like traveling ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).

The biggest portion of my life belongs to computers.

I find all things unixy the most appealing to me - the simplicity and elegance - Keep It Simple, Stupid... aka KISS principle resonates with me.

Software which is snappy, fast and with a low footprint is the one I use the most and I usually suffer using anything written by OOPs people - so much so that I had to rant (!) about it (not for the faint of heart: bloatware).

If an app or a website is loading in seconds then I am automatically closing the window/tab as a reflex - there is no excuse for it...
